Voices From The Garage

Winter! Finally here and time to gather my resources

With the REAL cold weather, as opposed to the not so bad weather we had up to now, it is time to organize for the work that needs to be done in the spring. Time for all the indoor stuff. The hard part right now is getting motivated. What I feel like doing is just hibernate. Or play some Gears of War and veg out. Not any real work.

I actually have lots of stuff to do. Since I have the 70 back with solid floor pans I can put it back together so I can  cruise it around this season.  And now that the dash is completed for the 54 I can replant that in the car.  Then I can follow it up with the wiring system. And I may even get around to redoing the roof paint on the 65 but dunno yet. Got the trim pieces just need to orchestrate the paint.

There may even be a PT Cruiser project in the making! Stay tuned!

Squeaky Toy is at the metal doctor

Well I have to tell you right now that my stomach hurts! Why you ask? Because I shipped Faye Deans 70 Mustang off to a friend to have some metal work done. And not having one of my “metal children’ under my control is twisting me up. Weird but true. But I am Santa Claus. And finally finding someone up to the task is really a great holiday present, so to speak. Tony is going to fix it up for me. So with a glass of Captain and Doctor by my side I am here letting you know that I am a bit twisted up right now. But Faye Dean says it will be fixed and I can finish it up for her soon. At least someone is here to calm me down. Between Faye and the Captain I think I will be good to go.

My friends at Big Jim’s Towing came and got the 70 this afternoon and delivered it to the shop. So now it is a wait and see as to when it will be finished so I can get it back. It has been a while finding someone to do the work I need done. Finding someone you can trust and getting good work done at a reasonable price has been a long search. But a business acquaintance is up to the task and is taking it on as I write.

So consider yourself informed and even with the holiday and all I may actually make some headway on this car very soon. Hopefully it will be up and running for Gratiot in May. Woodward Dream Cruise for sure!

Stay tuned for updates! I am both anxious and relieved. Now, on with the festivities! A few more Captains and I will be one jolly MF!

Happy Holiday from Bob’s Garage

Awesome BBQ setup!

Take one car body, your BBQ unit and your patio set and roll them into one!

While I was browsing through my Road Royalty accountI came across this photo triplet of a BBQ setup. I guess if you have a derelict car body and are not exactly sure how to make use of it …well … here is one creative solution. We have seen, I have at least’ seen BBQ’s made of front or rear clips of some vehicle, this one uses the whole car! Just frickin awesome is all I can say. A whole bunch of time and effort for this setup and I commend the effort and the result. Take a look and decide for yourself.

I don’t know about you but I am headed out to see what kind of body I can come up with! Just Fooling! But this is one killer idea.

That’s it! I’m goin’ inside!

Capt Cranky

It’s now official! I am moving indoors!

I have taken down the patio tables and the grille is cleaned and covered. I guess you can call this the “official ” end of the outdoor season. Well, for me at least.  I have moved the cars indoors to sleep for the winter. So that means I can turn my attention to the other projects that I want to get done. And there are bunch I should have gotten done earlier but cruise season got in the way. Faye Dean is pretty tolerant of this so I need to finish these now because I don’t really have a car related excuse. Updating the kitchen floor is at the top of the list. So it’s off to the home improvement store.

I do have a couple of Car Deco projects planned for the off season in the works. One is a wall lamp using a Chevy Caprice rear taillight section.  The other is a multi-level table from a two piece import transmission case. I have all the basic pieces so a bit of creative finagling and they should come together nicely. Stay tuned for the updates  on these two pieces.

Old age sucks!

Capt Cranky

And is a real pain in the …. knees!

I have become the proverbial cranky old man next store! You kids get off my lawn! Haven’t quite gotten to that point yet but I can’t say it’s not a ways off.

Having passed into the sixth decade of my life I am getting to hate old age. Now that the weather is changing into it’s fall/winter mode I have had to pack the cruising cars away for the winter and move my attention indoors. My hands and knees give me a great weather report daily. And it makes working outside a bit of a pain, literally. And I really do enjoy a good long hot soak. But I will start on getting those things done that I neglected during cruise season like the finish trim in a couple of rooms and I may even get to finishing the railing section in the den upstairs. We shall see!

I have already planned a couple of new Car Deco projects, both tables, for the winter season. So I won’t be totally bored. Fat chance! It will be more of a battle with the lounge chair to see if I want to actually get up and do something. And my website is due for a tuneup which is already underway.

With that being said I am going to have a good hot soak and the me and the Captain (Morgan) are going to just hang out for a while. Probably watch the tube, sorry , flat screen for a while. We will see what tomorrow brings but my knees say it should be clear but a bit cold! I will have to verify that on the news at 11.

Kinda like getting poked with a stick

Just a followup note from being out in the sun on Saturday at the Billetproof show in Ypsilanti MI with Steve. The show is pre-65 no billet rat rod show and I must say I had an awesome time. The sun, my son, the people and of course, the cars is a real motivator. I was pretty sure I would see some great ideas to incorporate in my own project and sure enough, they were there. It was also a motivator with the point being, as Steve was so kind to point out, I needed to quit being such a nit picker and get the mechanicals lined out, get it up and running and let the body be for now. He also pointed out that it was actually better than some that were there. I had to agree with him. And to top it of, a 54 Ford was there that had a very similar layout (engine, trans, rear end) to mine. And the choice for a shifter was identical also. An extended conversation and some looking around netted some excellent info and details. All in all, I must say that between the sunshine, my sons insights and the cars I got a more pointed view of what has to get done. Now if I can pull it off. Heading back into the shop to get back at it. Brakes and fuel lines are the prime project and the wiring harness is ready to go in! Stay tuned!

Made in Detroit circa 1985

It appears that Chrysler’s claim to the tag line ” Imported from Detroit’ may have been easily trumped by an ad from 1985 by some Bay area Cadillac dealers! Found this on Jalopnik. What the heck makes Chrysler so special that they can claim sole ownership of that tag line? It appears that the ad gurus have just recycled an old line. The line has actually been used many times over the years by numerous auto company’s in the US to compete with the numerous off shore competitors.

Sooo….. this is a claim by a company that is partially funded by money “Imported From Italy!” What the hey? It appears that Chrysler may want to pay more attention to building “World Class Cars” and less time bothering ordinary citizens making T shirts.

Now if they do market some cloned Fiat based cars do you think they will claim “Imported from Italy” in their advertising? I dare to say probably not!

National Collector Car Appreciation Day July 8,2011

National Collector Car Appreciation Day July 8,2011

It’s official! This is OUR day to show off our contributions to the national heritage with our sweat and dollars. Bring them out and support our day in the spotlight.

Lawmakers Acknowledge Importance of Collection and Restoration of Historic and Classic Cars

Washington, D.C. (April 15, 2011) — The United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 154 (S. Res. 154) at the request of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Councils designating July 8, 2011 as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The date marks the second commemoration in what will become an annual event to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

S. Res. 154 was sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus members Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). Senators Tester and Burr have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, and S. Res. 154 reaffirms their understanding of the cultural importance of collector cars. The Caucus is an informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America’s ever growing love affair with the car and motorsports. The Caucus recognizes the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for motorsports.

“Last year, the United States Senate helped launch the first national Collector Car Appreciation Day at our request,” said SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. “As a result, thousands of Americans gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation’s automotive heritage. SEMA’s commitment to preserving and promoting the automotive restoration industry through its projects and programs is evident in this special day. We look forward to even more celebrations this July 8 and in the years to come.”

In recognition of the day, collectors and enthusiasts will be hosting events across the country. ARMO Chairman Laura Bergan said, “On July 8, 2011, collectors and enthusiasts will host hundreds of events across the country. We will proudly partner with individuals, car clubs and businesses as they organize car cruises, club gatherings and other educational events to celebrate the day.”

Rick Love, HRIA chairman-elect said, “The industry endeavors to preserve our nation’s automotive heritage while providing well-paying, high-skilled jobs nationwide. Collector Car Appreciation Day is a singular tribute to this industry and the millions of hobbyists it supports.”
